Before our kids even step onto a sports field, their spines face a massive structural challenge every single day in the classroom. School backpacks have become notoriously heavy. Between massive textbooks, binders, laptops, water bottles, and sports gear, the modern backpack often becomes a crushing weight for a developing child to carry.
When a child hoists a heavy backpack onto their shoulders, their body must compensate for the sudden rearward pull of gravity. To keep from falling backward, the child is forced to roll their shoulders forward and lean their torso forward from the hips. This posture forces the cervical spine into a severe forward head tilt, commonly referred to as tech neck or backpack slouch.
