Patient: B.M., Age 63
Condition: Left Frozen Shoulder
Treatment: SoftWave Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT)
Treatment Duration: 6 weeks, 8 treatments
Outcome: Full, pain-free shoulder range of motion, maintained at a two-year follow-up
When Shoulder Pain Makes Even Simple Movements Difficult
At 63, B.M. was dealing with a frozen left shoulder that had become extremely painful and
severely restricted movement.
B.M.’s shoulder movement was especially limited. During the initial examination, left shoulder
abduction—the movement of lifting the arm out to the side—was restricted to just 10 degrees,
with severe pain (180 degrees is normal).
Her orthopedic surgeon had recommended cortisone injections and a year of physical therapy.
Before pursuing that treatment plan, B.M. decided to try SoftWave Therapy at Trinity Advanced
Health.
B.M. received an initial SoftWave ESWT treatment targeting the affected shoulder.
Immediately following the first treatment, shoulder abduction increased from 10 degrees to
110 degrees.
That represented a 100-degree improvement in the ability to lift the arm out to the side after a
single session.
Although full shoulder motion had not yet returned, the initial improvement was encouraging,
and B.M. continued with a structured course of SoftWave Therapy.
Six Weeks of SoftWave Therapy
B.M.’s treatment schedule consisted of:
∙Weeks 1–2: Two SoftWave treatments per week
∙Weeks 3–6: One SoftWave treatment per week
∙Total: 8 treatments over 6 weeks
Throughout the treatment program, B.M.’s shoulder mobility continued to improve.
After six weeks of treatment, full pain-free shoulder range of motion had been restored,
without undergoing the recommended cortisone injections or physical therapy.
Two Years Later: Still Pain-Free
At a follow-up two years after completing SoftWave Therapy, B.M. still had full shoulder range
of motion without pain.
The patient did not need the previously recommended cortisone injections or physical therapy.
For someone who initially could barely lift an arm away from the body, returning to full, pain-
free movement—and maintaining it for two years—was significant.
While frozen shoulder can sometimes resolve naturally over time, recovery may take months or
even years. In this case, B.M. experienced a substantial improvement in shoulder movement after
the first SoftWave treatment and regained full, pain-free motion following an eight-treatment
program over six weeks.
The long-term follow-up was equally encouraging, with the patient maintaining those
improvements two years later.
